Nail care between appointments: five habits that actually matter

Three to four weeks pass between two visits to the nail station. What happens in that gap decides half of how your nails look — and, more importantly, what condition they are in when the coating comes off.

1. Cuticle oil, every evening

If you take one thing from this article, take this. Oil is not a salon indulgence: the skin around the nail is thin and dries quickly, and when it dries it tightens and cracks. One drop on each finger, massaged in for thirty seconds, in the evening.

You see the difference within two weeks — the cuticle stays supple, and the coating holds better because the edge is not being lifted by dry skin.

2. Gloves for cleaning and dishes

Washing-up liquid and cleaning products are aggressive by design — that is their job. Repeated contact dries the nail, weakens the coating and irritates the surrounding skin. A pair of gloves costs almost nothing and saves the work.

3. Nails are not tools

This is where most sets are ruined, and almost nobody notices at the time. Opening lids, tearing packaging, lifting labels, prying staples — every time, the force lands exactly on the bond.

This is not about being excessively delicate. It is about reaching for a tool when you need a tool.

4. Do not ignore a small lift

If the coating has lifted in one corner, water gets underneath and, over time, moisture can develop where it should not. Lifting on a single nail takes minutes to repair at the studio, without redoing the whole set.

Call. Even if your refill is still two weeks away.

5. The rule you never break

Do not peel the coating off. Not even when it lifts by itself, not even when “it is coming off soon anyway”. The top layer of your nail comes away with the gel — and that does not grow back in days, it takes months.

If you want a break from coatings, have it removed properly at the studio. A break now and then is a good idea, but how you start it matters more than the break itself.

When to come back

At 3–4 weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow. The sign is visible: a grown-out zone appears at the base and the shape of the work stops sitting in balance. At the refill the coating is renewed and the shape rebalanced — nothing is started from scratch.

FAQ

How often should I use cuticle oil?

Every evening — one drop on each finger, massaged in for thirty seconds. You see the difference within two weeks: the cuticle stays supple and your gel polish holds better, because the edge does not lift along with dry skin.

Do gloves for washing up really make a difference?

Yes. Dish soap and cleaning products dry the nail, weaken the gel and irritate the skin around it. A pair of gloves protects a manicure better than anything you buy afterwards.

A corner of my gel has lifted — should I wait for my appointment?

Call instead of waiting, even if your next visit is two weeks away. Water gets in underneath and moisture can build up where it shouldn't. Lifting on a single nail is repaired in minutes at the studio, without redoing the whole set.

Why can't I peel gel polish off myself?

The top layer of the nail comes off with the gel, and that grows back over months, not days. Taking a break from gel is a good idea now and then, but how you start the break matters more than the break itself.
