Gel polish, builder gel or extensions: which one is for you
“I want gel.” That sentence reaches the nail station dozens of times a month, and it means something different every time. Gel polish, builder gel and extensions are three separate treatments with three separate jobs — and the wrong choice shows within three weeks.
Gel polish: colour that lasts
Gel polish (also called semi-permanent polish) is a coloured coating applied to your own nail in thin layers, each cured under a lamp. It does not lengthen the nail and does not thicken it noticeably — it simply dresses it.
It is the right choice if your nails grow straight, do not bend and do not break on their own. It lasts 3–4 weeks on average, depending on how fast your nails grow and how hard you are on your hands.
Builder gel: support for nails that bend
Here the gel does not just colour, it builds. A layer with real thickness and architecture is shaped — thicker in the middle, thinner towards the edges — giving the nail strength and a correct form without adding length.
This is the answer for thin nails that bend at the slightest pressure or snap exactly when they have reached the length you wanted. Many clients arrive convinced they need extensions when what they actually need is a builder: their nail grows well, it just cannot hold itself up.
Extensions: length you do not have
Extensions add length over the natural nail, on a form. They are used when your own nail is too short for what you want, when you are after a shape your length does not allow, or when a broken nail needs rebuilding.
They take longer to apply and need more careful refills, but they solve situations where nothing else works.
How to choose, in three questions
- Do my nails bend or break on their own? If so, you need a builder, not plain gel polish.
- Do I like the length I have? If so, you do not need extensions, however good they look on Instagram.
- How much do I use my hands? Someone who washes dishes, cooks and types all day needs more strength than someone at a desk.
What all three have in common
Whatever you choose, two things stay the same. A refill at 3–4 weeks — not because it has “expired”, but because the nail has grown and the centre of gravity of the work has shifted. And the most important rule: never peel the coating off. The top layer of your nail comes with it, and recovery takes months, not days.
At MY MARAFET STUDIO we look at your nails together before deciding — often the answer is not the one you walked in with. See what the nail station offers or write to us and we will tell you what suits you.
FAQ
What is the difference between gel polish, builder gel and extensions?
Gel polish is colour applied in thin layers over your natural nail — it does not lengthen it or noticeably thicken it. Builder gel builds a structured layer, thicker through the middle and thinner towards the edges, which gives the nail strength and a proper shape without adding length. Extensions add length beyond your own nail.
How much does it matter how hard I use my hands?
It's one of the three questions the choice starts with. Someone who washes dishes, cooks and types all day needs more strength than someone at a desk, so the same nail can call for builder gel in one case and plain gel polish in another.
My nails bend and break — do I need extensions?
Usually not. Thin nails that bend under the slightest pressure, or break just as they reach the length you wanted, need builder gel rather than added length. Extensions are for when your own nail is too short for the look you want, or when a broken nail is being repaired.
